Shiatsu and Emotions

Fall is once again here, and with it cooler temperatures, shorter days and less light, and sometimes this change can have an effect on our emotional well-being.

Shiatsu can have a profound effect on the emotions. Each organ and meridian is assigned a different emotion. The Liver is said to be related to anger, the Heart relates to Joy, and the Spleen deals with worry or overthinking.

Many times clients ask whether a physical problem started the emotional problem, or whether an emotional issue can manifest as a physical problem. The answer is yes for both. In Chinese medicine emotional health and physical health are not separate; they are both reflections of the state of overall health of an individual.

Therefore someone who has a quick, hot temper most likely has a Liver imbalance, this may also be reflected in headaches or migraines. Someone who worries a lot may have issues with their Spleen, and this may also manifest as diarrhea.

Certain acupoints are useful in dealing with emotional issues. For example Heart 7 (Shen Men in Chinese which loosely translates to Spirit Gate) is said by some to be the most calming point on the body. It is also used for insomnia and heart palpitations. It is located on the crease on the inside of the wrist just inside the small bone.
