The end of summer is here, and the start of cold and flu season is upon us. It is considered normal for healthy adults to have one or two colds a year, but it may be possible to prevent getting sick in the first place. Below are three simple but important tips to help keep you healthy this year.
  1. Wash Your Hands
Most cold and flu bugs are spread by direct contact with someone with the cold or flu. Hand washing prevents the spread of the bug. Avoiding touching your face is also a good idea because cold and flu bugs enter your body through the eyes, nose, or mouth.

  2. Drink Plenty of Fluids
Fluids help to flush germs out of your body preventing them from making you sick. When you’re drinking enough fluids your urine will be pale coloured rather than dark yellow.

  3. Eat to Stay Healthy
Foods such as yogurt, fruits and vegetables, garlic, onion and ginger have properties which help your body fight off colds and flus and can prevent you from getting sick.

If despite doing the right things you come down with a cold or flu take the time to rest and recover. Laying low, drinking plenty of fluids, and giving your body a chance to heal will help you feel better more quickly. You should contact a healthcare professional if you experience:

  • unusually severe cold symptoms
  • high fever
  • ear pain
  • cough that gets worse while other cold symptoms improve, or
  • flare-up of any chronic lung problem, such as asthma.
