Insomnia

You are lying in bed unable to sleep. Tossing and turning you know you have to get up in 5 hours; you’ve checked the clock twice in the past 10 minutes. Your mind is racing and your muscles are tense and tight. A lot of us experience insomnia from time to time. It is unpleasant and can interfere greatly with your day to day life.

With the mind body connection, shiatsu is an excellent treatment for insomnia. After a treatment clients report an excellent night’s sleep and wake feeling truly rested rather than still tired.

There are some basic tips which are very helpful when you suffer from periods of insomnia. If your insomnia interferes with your waking hours for more than 3 weeks it should be discussed with your doctor as it can indicate a more serious problem. If the insomnia is occasional or transient the below tips will be very useful in helping you get to sleep...
  • Avoid caffeine from midday to bedtime, alcohol, a heavy meal in the evening, and vigorous exercise for 4 hours before bedtime.
  • Get regular exercise during the day.
  • Do self massage on the area just below the skull on the back of the head. Many of the acupuncture points located there such as Gall Bladder 20 (pictured) and DU 16 are excellent for insomnia.
  • Try to have a pre bed ritual that is relaxing and mundane and avoid going to bed before you feel tired.
  • Try taking a bath before bedtime.
  • Go to sleep at the same time every night and wake at the same time in the mornings.
  • When you go to bed practice progressive relaxation. While breathing deeply consciously relax the muscles in your body starting between your ankles and knees. Then move to your upper legs between your knees and your thighs. Then go on to your hips, buttocks and lower abdomen. Consciously ease the muscle tissues until you get to the tip of your head. Repeat as necessary.
  • Do not lie in bed tossing and turning if you cannot get to sleep. Get out of the bedroom and do something quiet and restful such as reading a gentle book wrapped in a blanket. Making a cup of chamomile tea is also a good idea as it is a relaxing herb.
