Neck and shoulder pain and tension are a huge problem especially with more and more people working on computers daily. The below stretches will help this painful condition.

Like any problem, neck and shoulder pain should be reported to your physician. This is especially important in the case of injuries, pain that radiates to the arms or jaw, pain that comes with a tingling or weakness in the legs or arms, or pain that is accompanied by flu-like symptoms.

Stretch only as far as comfortable, and contact your healthcare provider if you experience any pain while stretching. This series of stretches takes about 2 minutes to complete, and will bring enormous rewards if done 2 - 3 times daily.
  • Sitting up straight or standing rotate your shoulders backwards in a circle. Make the circles as round as possible as you move your shoulders up, back, down, and towards your front. Repeat 5 times. Now rotate your shoulders in the opposite direction.

  • Raise your shoulders up to your ears as you inhale. Hold your breath and feel a slight tension in your neck and shoulders for a few seconds. As you exhale drop your shoulders downward letting go of the tension. Repeat 3 times.

  • Inhale keeping your shoulders down and level. Exhale and drop your head slowly to the left trying to touch your ear to your shoulder (do not raise your shoulder to your ear). Inhale moving your head back to centre and exhale as you do the same stretch on the right side. Repeat as needed.

  • Inhale, then exhale slowly and drop your chin to your chest. Inhaling roll your right ear to your right shoulder. Exhale while you bring your chin back to the center of your chest, and repeat on the left side. Repeat as needed.
